Chile's president has rejected a proposal by the Catholic Church for a wide-ranging pardon of elderly prison inmates, including former army officials accused of abuses during military rule. Sebastian Pinera said on Sunday he would only consider case-by-case pardons on humanitarian grounds, while serious offenses related to war crimes would not be considered.
